The Fine Art of Yoga

As I find myself considering my next series of work, the life changing event that was discovering yoga springs to mind. I first started to practice because a cute girl asked me to class, that was 6 years ago and in 3 months we will marry…Back to my yoga and fine art here. I invested in some film equipment earlier in the year and have a strong urge to put it to the test against the backdrop of the Rockies, thinking yogi’s, black and white film,maybe a glimpse of human flesh and making it a collection…wait isn’t that what we call fine art…let me google “Fine Art Yoga Photography”…surprise no wiki info (wiki - Fine art photography refers to photographs that are created in accordance with the creative vision of the photographer as artist), just lots of really great image makers, two of my favs were David Lavikka for his expressive angles and James Wvinner for his great lighting. Fortunately for me I did not see thousands of yogi’s on rocks so out comes the sketch pad and pencils, roll out the creative mat and let the games begin.

Richard Photo Lab that is…after my recent visit to Santa Monica for Tadasana Festival, I took some time to explore Richard Photo Lab with a guided tour of their facility in Hollywood. They are a self professed small lab that I quote “specialize and pride ourselves in listening to photographers’ needs and helping them achieve the results that they and their clients expect”. Amazing business philosophy and one that has certainly rewarded them impressive clients..I am not one to name drop so check em out on Facebook.

I was immediately impressed with their knowledge and more than that their interest in what I was doing and with what equipment – I had my new toy, the Fuji GX680III, in hand and that started things of nicely. The image I choose to show for this post was taken just a week prior at Sat Nam Fest, before I had even met them and talked over my profile’s and color preferences. It’s only their medium scan too….no enhancement has been made by, this is it straight from the scanner. Enjoy.

The hottest moment from Tadasana

If you were to look down the list at Tadasana Festival for the lineup of amazing and beautiful teachers you might automatically assume from the title of this post that I was picking out my favorite yogi…quite the contrary I am referring to the moment for me that it all clicked it to place and the yoga blended with the music and art and the spark ignited that moment, that one moment that burned hotter than the rest. Well here it is..In a class with Suzanne Sterling you rarely get to be anything other than inspired and energized, here she leads the circle of 300 plus people in to a frenzy of love and gratitude. Tadasana Festival, we’re just getting started…

What a day…Tadasana Festival has officially started and with this line up there are just too many names to mention, so I am simply going to note that I probably burned 5 miles between the 5 main tents, changed batteries twice, added a good 1200 images and was trying to shoot conservatively. It was a amazing start to a new festival to hit Santa Monica Pier with a boom. I think the final shot of the day with Shiva Rae and DJ CHEB I SABBAH basically says it all…

What to take away from Sat Nam Fest

After four intense days at this festival, it is time to sit back and soak it all in to see what I have learned and how I can grow from the exposure to a whole set of new experiences. Sat Nam Fest has been amazing and in so many more ways than I could have ever imagined. Here are a few of my many highlights…The community of Kundalini yogi’s is open to all newcomers and I never felt that any teacher or musician was above me, they see humans as just that, humans, that all come from the same creator ( I think humanity at large could learn a lot from that). The music was class ‘A’ all the way, much respect to Spirit Voyage for the line up. Camping (well kind of) in the Buzz Bus. Some of the best Vegan food I have ever had, thanks you Chef Shivanter Singh , especially for the brownies. Sitting in on interviews with Where is my Guru. The desert sun (when it finally came out). The happy vibes. Joshua Trees. And most importantly the people, everyone was so welcoming and friendly, even to a guy like me that had never been to a Kundalini class and went out and bought a bunch of white clothing the day before to “fit in” (which was totally un-necessary but highly amusing, if only to myself). Did I mention meeting Russell Brand (inside joke!)…To all my new friends, I hope our paths cross again soon. Sat Nam and Namaste.

Day 3 of Sat Nam Fest and I decided to practice as much as possible in the classes that I was shooting. As a novice to the Kundalini world but a fairly regular Hatha yoga practitioner I was not as prepared as a I thought I might be. The pranayama (breathing exercises) combined with minutes of small repetitive physical movements and the extended hold ( and I mean a full 11 minutes) of poses was to say the least a strain..OK I fess up, I got my ass handed to me today in class with Gurmukh…Thank goodness for the fantastic musical performances from Ashana, Jai-Jagdeesh, Mirabai Ceiba, The GuruGanesha Band and DJ Krishan that were mixed in throughout the day so I could sit and relax and breathe in the sweet sounds all provided by Spirit Voyage. Rain can’t stop the Kundalini fire.

Day two of Sat Nam and what started as a bright and clear day turned nasty when the wind and rain whipped their way through the tents, but did it stop the Kundalini yogi’s?…heck no it inspired Aykanna to pick up the pace and play even harder and the crowd responded with a dancing frenzy, stamping their feet and raising their voices with a united chant of ‘Wahe Guru’. Luckily for us the rain passed just in time for the sun to set (pictured) and the evenings activities began with a two hour set by Snatam Kaur and guest Nirinjan Kaur. Sat Nam Fest

Day one in the desert of Joshua Tree, CA and it has been a day of firsts at the Sat Nam Kundalini festival…waking early on the Buzz Bus for Sadhana yoga at four am ( yes 4am! ), my very experience of a sunrise in the dry Joshua Tree desert, a glimpse of the amazing architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright at the retreat center, chanting and meditating with Ramdesh, Jai-Jagdeesh, Satnam Kaur ( who just played for Oprah ), Ram Dass, Nirinjan Kaur and finally out friends Aykanna from the spirit voyage label, I sat in on an interview with Where is my Guru and I did not even get to mention, totally vegan, organic food prepared especially for the some 500 attendees by Chef Shivanter Singh…yummy. Day 1 may be over but there is more to come tomorrow, full gallery of pics here

Festival season is upon us

The excitement is building, the suitcase has been pulled from under the bed and the camera’s are all dusted off and loaded with fresh batteries. I guess it’s time to take another adventure. Starting tomorrow we will be in California for 2 weeks for the beginning of this years Yoga Festival circuit. The journey begins in beautiful Joshua Tree with Sat Nam Fest – A Spirit Fest Kundalini Yoga & Music Festival and then moves on to Santa Monica in our 25 foot Airstream,( The Buzz Bus ) for the Tadasana Festival. The opportunity to shoot film and visit the desert for the first time has been something I have wanted to do since I moved to the States 15 years ago, I feel like a kid in a candy store…
